It’s April – and that means Russia is officially a visa-free destination for South Africans! To add to this great travel news, South Africa’s formal proposal for the European Union to consider doing away with their extortionate fees and tree endangering visa paperwork has officially been submitted.
Let’s all take a moment to hold collective thumbs that this goes through and Zuma doesn’t fuck this up for us as well.
I decided to put together a list of some of the best, cheapest and unique visa-free countries for South African passport holders to visit in 2017.
I’ve included average return flight prices as well as affordable indirect flights if you want to add an extra country to your itinerary. Please note I used Skyscanner‘s cheapest month to travel in an entire year feature and prices might not be the same when you search due to dates, airline sales etc. The flights are also not direct in some cases and do include stopovers. I am just using direct/indirect to show how to get to that country from nearby destinations.
Whether you’re looking to catch a tan on an island in Asia, visit Europe or explore our beautiful African continent, here’s some of the best visa on arrival, free e-visas and visa-free countries for South African passport holders in 2017!

Love this list!! However, please update potential pricelist accordingly. I got all too excited looking at your estimates, and was so disappointed to find only much much higher prices on the internet… Otherwise great blog! Keep up the good work! In the name of travel, cheers!

Hi Stephen,
I understand but it’s impossible for me to keep flight prices up to date. Airlines constantly increase or decrease prices due to a number of factors such as time of year, number of seats left on the plane and even airfare errors. I would have to have a program constantly running and fetching prices.
The best way to check is to use a website called Skyscanner and use their search feature that let’s you select the cheapest month or cheapest time out of the whole year to travel. You can also set your destination to everywhere so you can see the cheapest flights departing from South Africa for your set travel dates, a particular month or the cheapest time to fly out of the year.
