Meet Lake Eibsee: The Best-Kept Munich Day Trip
A few months ago, I found myself in Munich for Taylor Swiftβs The Eras Tour. Two days before the concert, temperatures hit 30 degrees, and I was desperate to get out of the city and escape the heat.
My late-night Googling led me to Lake Eibsee.
And boy, oh boy, did my jaw hit the floor.
- Epic mountain views? Check.
- Scenic train rides? x2
- A crystal clear alpine lake? You got it, dude.
Within minutes, I had booked my train ticket and a loose plan to find Lake Eibsee and spend the day cooling off in her phantasmagoric waters.
If youβre looking for the perfect day trip from Munich that isnβt just another castle or a crowded beer garden (although I love those too), Lake Eibsee is your dream destination.
Hereβs exactly how to get to Lake Eibsee, what to do, and why itβs an adventure worth every penny.

How to Get to Lake Eibsee From Munich
One of the best things about Lake Eibsee? Getting there is half the adventure. Unlike other day trips, where youβre crammed into a bus with zero legroom, your journey to Eibsee involves not one, but TWO epic scenic train rides through Bavariaβs dreamiest landscapes.
Step 1: Grab a Bayern Day Ticket
Before you do anything, get yourself a Bayern Day Ticket. Itβs hands down the most cost-effective way to travel, giving you unlimited regional train rides for the day and discounts on the two trains youβll need to reach Lake Eibsee.
You can buy it online, at ticket machines, or at train stations. I would recommend purchasing it online (it saves you time), and you can skip any language-barrier awkwardness.
Step 2: Take The Train from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Next, you want to take a regional train from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (aka Garmisch.P). The ride takes about 1.5 hours and comes with rolling meadows, charming Bavarian villages, and glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance.
The train runs frequently throughout the day, but Iβd take one of the earliest departures so you can maximise your time at Lake Eibsee before making your way back to Munich. The trains donβt run the whole day, so you will need to time your departure accordingly.
You can find the timetable for the regional trains on the DB website.
Step 3: Travel From Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Eibsee Via Train or Bus
Once you arrive in Garmisch.P, you have two options to reach Lake Eibsee:
- The Bus: The quickest option is the Eibsee Bus, which takes about 20 minutes and runs regularly throughout the day. It will get you there, but it lacks the charm of the scenic train ride. You can find the timetable here.
- The Zugspitzbahn Train: On the other hand, you have the Zugspitzbahn train. Itβs an old-school cogwheel train that chugs through the forest and past epic mountain views before dropping you off across from the entrance to Lake Eibsee. It runs roughly once an hour, and you can find the full timetable here. Bonus? It even does a charming little toot-toot along the way. Sold. The Zugspitzbahn Train ticket is NOT included with the Bayern ticket.
Tip: If youβre planning on heading up the Zugspitze, Germanyβs highest peak, consider getting the Zugspitz Ticket, which covers both the Zugspitzbahn train and the cable car to the summit.
Best Things to Do at Lake Eibsee
Once you arrive, hold onto your socks. The lake looks like it belongs in Switzerland or Canada, yet here it is β just chilling in Bavaria.
Swim in the Crystal-Clear Alpine Waters
Eibseeβs water has insane visibility. You can see everything happening below your feet, including the schools of tiny fish swimming past. Find a shady spot along the banks of the lake and get yourself ready for a day of swimming and basking in the sun.
While itβs not as popular as other places in Europe, itβs well-known among the locals. The earlier you arrive, the better spot you can find along the shores. It can be quite chilly in the shade (even in the heat of summer), so finding a place with enough sun and shade is a winner.
Donβt forget to bring snacks and plenty of water!
P.S. There are bathrooms near the restaurant you can use to change into your swimming gear before heading down to the lake.
Hike Around Lake Eibsee

The Eibsee Loop Trail is an easy 7km hike that wraps around the entire lake. It takes about two hours, but youβll want to stop every five minutes to snap photos. The trail offers insane panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, dense pine forests, and turquoise waters. There are plenty of benches and rest spots, so you can pause to take it all in.
Or you can throw caution to the wind, jump in the lake to cool off, and continue on your hot girl hike.
Grab a Beer with a View
Because whatβs a day trip in Bavaria without a beer garden? The Eibsee Alm is perched right by the water, serving up cold pints and hearty German food. Order a WeiΓbier (wheat beer) and a Schnitzel, and soak in the mountain views. The beer garden has both indoor and outdoor seating, making it a great spot regardless of the weather.
Take the Cable Car to the Top of Germany
If youβre feeling adventurous (and youβre visiting on a clear day), hop on the Zugspitze Cable Car and head to the highest peak in Germany. Itβs a little pricey (β¬69,00 per person) but 1000% worth it.
The ride itself is an experience, taking you from the lake to the summit in just 10 minutes. At the top, youβll get panoramic views that stretch all the way into Austria. On a clear day, you can see four countries!
The Best Time to Visit Lake Eibsee
Eibsee is a stunner year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you want.
Summer (JuneβAugust): If you want to swim, sunbathe, and enjoy the lake in its full glory, summer is the best time to go. Expect warm temperatures, clear skies, and plenty of daylight for hiking and exploring. Itβs also the busiest season, so arrive early to beat the crowds.
Autumn (SeptemberβNovember): If you prefer fewer tourists and stunning fall colours, autumn is a fantastic choice. The trees surrounding the lake turn fiery red and orange, making the already scenic hike around the lake even more magical. While temperatures start to drop, the views make up for it.
Winter (DecemberβFebruary): Winter at Eibsee is a frozen wonderland. The lake partially freezes over, and the surrounding peaks are covered in snow, making it a dream for photographers. Plus, this is prime time for skiing on the Zugspitze!
Spring (MarchβMay): Spring is the best time if youβre searching for solitude. The lake is quiet, the snow is melting, and the landscape is waking up from winter.

Plan Your Day Trip to Lake Eibsee
Eibsee is the ultimate day trip from Munich. Itβs a place where alpine beauty, outdoor adventure, and Bavarian charm come together to create something magical.
Itβs still a bit of a hidden gem compared to Bavariaβs more famous attractions, which makes it a must-visit for your Munich itinerary. So grab your Bayern Ticket, hop on that scenic train, and donβt forget your swimsuit!

Lake Eibsee: Frequently Asked Questions
Lake Eibsee is about 90km south of Munich, near the town of Grainau in the Bavarian Alps. By train, the journey from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Garmisch-Partenkirchen takes roughly 1.5 hours, followed by another 20β30 minutes on the Zugspitzbahn train or the Eibsee Bus to reach the lake.
No. The Bayern Ticket covers the regional train from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but the Zugspitzbahn (the cogwheel train from Garmisch to Eibsee) requires a separate ticket.
Yes! There are spots along the shore to catch some sun and swim, and bathrooms near the Eibsee Alm restaurant, where you can get changed.
The Eibsee Loop Trail is 7km and takes roughly 2 hours. The trail is easy to moderate and mostly flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Budget extra time for photo stops!
Thatβs a beautiful place. Iβm so excited to visit here this summer. Thank you so much for the suggestion. I had a very naive doubt. Does the place offer any public changing place after a nice swim?
There are bathrooms if you walk back towards the restaurant, but not by the lake.
Hey, great post, helped a lot!
So the Zugspitzbahn Train is included in the bayern ticket, right?
Also, after leaving Garmisch.P, how long does the scenic train takes to get to Eibsee?
Thanks a lot.
Hello! I canβt remember how long the scenic train was exactly, the train doesnβt move very fast as itβs old, but it also doesnβt cover a massive distance. Honestly, I canβt remember if itβs included, I would plan for it not being. I know I had to go to the ticket office and showed them by Bayern ticket, but I canβt remember if I paid anything to get the ticket for the Zugs.
Hi, thank you for this guide! I will be visiting very soon and love to collect memorabilia! Could you tell me where you got that ticket/card that you featured in one of the photos? Is there a souvenirs shop?
Thanks!
Hello! That ticket is for the train that takes you to Lake Eibsee. Iβm not sure if there is a souvenirs shop, but there is probably one.
