The Best Train Travel Destinations to Explore on a Budget
Hello, my name is Lauren, and I love trains.
Growing up, I was low-key jealous of that Stuart Little kid who had that pimpin’ train set. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and couldn’t wait to scream “All aboard!” at the top of my lungs one day.
And, boy, have I made up for those childhood dreams.
If there is the option to explore a destination by train, I’m there. I don’t care if it takes longer. I’m going to be staring out the window the whole way there.
Over the years, I’ve explored Europe, India, Thailand, and Kenya via rail, and I have a dozen more destinations I’d like to tick off (Japan and Canada, I’m looking at you).
But the best part about train travel?
It sometimes works out cheaper (if you’ve got your travel ducks in order), and you can even save a night on accommodation with a night train.

Japan: Exploring with the Japan Rail Pass
Japan is a fascinating destination, but it’s a bit pricey.
That’s where the Japan Rail Pass comes in. It’s your key to unlocking affordable travel across the country. Whether you’re speeding through the heart of Japan on the Shinkansen bullet train or exploring regional routes, the pass covers major train lines, giving you unbeatable value.
One of the best times to use the pass is during autumn when the fall foliage transforms the landscape. The autumn season (typically from October to November) brings stunning red, orange, and yellow hues that sweep across top destinations like Kyoto, Nikko, and Hakone.
With the Japan Rail Pass in hand, you can easily hop between these locations, soaking up the beauty of Japanese gardens, temples, and natural landscapes.
In my opinion, I think it’s prettier than the cherry blossoms.

Europe: Affordable Adventures with the Eurail Pass

Europe’s vast rail network is a dream come true for budget travelers, and the Eurail Pass makes it even better.
Covering over 30 countries, the pass allows you to hop between cities and explore Europe at your own pace. Whether you’re zipping from Paris to Amsterdam on high-speed trains or meandering through the Swiss Alps on a scenic route, the Eurail Pass gives you two of the things I love the most: flexibility and affordability.
Getting the Most Out of the Eurail Pass:
- Plan Your Routes Ahead of Time
While the Eurail Pass offers flexibility, some high-speed and popular routes require reservations. Booking these early can save you from paying additional fees and guarentees you get a seat during busy travel times. - Use Night Trains to Save on Accommodation
A great hack for long-distance routes is to travel overnight on sleeper trains. This allows you to skip a night’s accommodation costs while waking up in a brand-new city. - Opt for Off-Peak Travel
Traveling during off-peak times (outside of weekends and holidays) can help you avoid crowds and get the best deals. Plus, Europe is often quieter and more enjoyable when it’s not swarming with tourists. - Maximize Your Travel Days
The Eurail Pass offers both continuous and flexible travel days. To get the most out of your pass, group longer journeys on the same day. For example, you can visit multiple countries in a single day if they’re close together (e.g., Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands). - Don’t Forget the Scenic Routes
Some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes are best viewed by train. Take advantage of scenic routes like the Glacier Express in Switzerland or the Cinque Terre line in Italy. These are often covered by the Eurail Pass and give you a unique perspective on Europe’s natural beauty.
India: Budget-Friendly Journeys on Indian Railways
India is a budget traveler’s paradise, and the Indian Railways system is the backbone of its transportation. With extensive routes and affordable fares, it’s the best way to explore the vast diversity of the country.
During my first trip to India, I took a sleeper train from Kerala to Chennai. It was an overnight journey, and I found the experience incredibly comfortable and safe. I woke up fresh and ready to explore Chennai, and I highly recommend the experience.
But I didn’t get to visit Goa because I made the cardinal mistake of not booking my train tickets early enough. By the time I got around to it, there were no seats left, and I had to make last-minute plans to Mysore on a bus (which I do not recommend unless you enjoy motion sickness).
Tip: Download the IRCTC App. You can heck schedules, book tickets, and even order food onboard.
Thailand: Exploring Southeast Asia by Rail
Thailand’s extensive rail network makes exploring the country both affordable and scenic. Trains are one of the most cost-effective ways to travel between Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and southern destinations like Phuket.
I’ve traveled via train in Thailand countless times. One of my favorite journeys is the sleeper train from Bangkok down to Phuket. You can book women-only second-class sleepers! This is amazing if you’re a solo female traveller like myself and want peace of mind when you dose off.

United States: Amtrak Rail Pass for Cross-Country Savings
The United States might be synonymous with road trips, but Amtrak’s Rail Pass is a hidden gem for budget travelers looking to explore the country by train.
The pass covers routes across vast regions of the U.S. You can visit up to 500 destinations, including major cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as smaller towns that are often overlooked.
Scenic routes like the California Zephyr, which runs from Chicago to San Francisco, take you through the stunning Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevadas. Another popular option is the Coast Starlight, which hugs the Pacific coast from Los Angeles to Seattle.
Tip: The Amtrak Rail Pass offers options for various lengths of travel. If you’re planning a longer adventure, the 15- or 30-day passes allow you to explore multiple regions at a discounted rate.
